Editorial Process and Peer Review

All manuscripts submitted to CienciAmérica are evaluated through a double-blind peer review process, in which the identities of both authors and reviewers remain confidential throughout the editorial process.

The editorial process includes the following stages:

  1. Initial editorial evaluation

The Editor or Editor-in-Chief performs a preliminary evaluation of the manuscript to verify:

  • Relevance to the journal’s scope and focus
  • Originality of the content
  • Compliance with the journal’s editorial guidelines
  • Compliance with publication ethics standards

The Editor may reject the manuscript at this stage without external review (desk rejection) if it does not meet the journal’s editorial or scientific criteria.

  1. Assignment of external reviewers

Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial evaluation are sent to at least two independent external reviewers with expertise in the relevant subject area.

Reviewers are selected by the Editor or Editor-in-Chief based on the following criteria:

  • Relevant academic and scientific expertise
  • Verified scientific publication record
  • Absence of conflicts of interest

  1. Peer review evaluation

Reviewers evaluate the manuscript and provide recommendations based on the following criteria:

  • Originality and scientific relevance
  • Methodological rigor
  • Validity and reliability of the results
  • Clarity and coherence of the presentation
  • Contribution to the advancement of knowledge

Reviewers are expected to provide objective, constructive, and evidence-based feedback to support their recommendations.

  1. Editorial decision

The final editorial decision is made by the Editor or Editor-in-Chief based on the reviewers’ reports and editorial judgment.

Possible decisions include:

  • Acceptance without revisions
  • Acceptance with minor revisions
  • Acceptance with major changes
  • Rejection

In cases of disagreement between reviewers, the Editor may:

  • Request an additional independent review, or
  • make a decision based on the overall evaluation of the available reports

The Editor or Editor-in-Chief is solely responsible for the final editorial decision.

Authors will be notified of the editorial decision within an estimated period of two to four months from manuscript submission.
