Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have become the engine for generating jobs in several developing countries, such as Ecuador. However, the lack of use of controls, audits and quality management systems in these companies makes them vulnerable to internal and external factors, such as globalization, which could even lead to disastrous consequences as an early bankruptcy. OBJECTIVE. To know the percentage of SMEs that use control, administrative audits and quality management systems. METHOD. Descriptive study in which 267 companies from the Metropolitan District of Quito were surveyed. RESULTS. The results of the research indicate that about half of the companies surveyed do not have controls in all their operational areas, nor management audits and quality control systems. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS. In a business world where changes have become the norm and not the exception, it cannot be expected that without the use of administrative tools there will be transformations that allow SMEs to face new challenges. Due to the high percentage of companies that do not use management tools, future research should analyze the causes of this problem and its potential solutions.
