Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Access to electricity significantly influences many aspects of society and its importance in everyday life is recognized. OBJECTIVE. Analyze the literature on access to electricity in rural areas, its impact on social development, the environment and the economy. METHOD. The research was developed through a bibliographic review and the aspects that influence the development of rural electrification were classified. RESULTS. The variables that define the study of electrification in rural areas were characterized and it was determined that a comprehensive approach must be taken in the implementation of electrification programs to achieve sustainability. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS. It is confirmed that electrification and the development of rural communities show complex relationships and it is necessary to continue with the analysis of the different dimensions of electrification.
