Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Estimate the increase in fatality due to traffic accidents associated with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in the provinces of the Republic of Ecuador. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Ecological study based on the records of victims and deaths from traffic accidents corresponding to the months of April from the years 2016 to 2020. The global and provincial fatality rates, relative risks and percentage of change were calculated. RESULTS: In April 2020, an increase in fatality was observed in relation to previous years. The increase in fatality compared to 2019 is heterogeneous, the provinces with the highest increases and risk were; Santa Elena from 4.7 to 200.0 (RR = 26.0; 95% CI = 2.9-115.9), Azuay 3.5 to 18.2 (RR = 3.5; 95% CI = 1.2 -10.6) and Guayas from 6.0 to 12.1 (RR = 1.7; 95% CI = 1.2-2.4). DISCUSSION: the increase in fatality due to traffic accidents in the provinces could be attributed to the health crisis of April 2020. Future outbreaks and collapses in hospitals would again lead to an increased risk of death from this cause.
