Development of cognitive strategies to improve English reading comprehension

Abstract
INTRODUCTION. The richness of the human being is reflected in its intellectual success, which is achieved through knowledge, since the correct understanding of the contents of the reading which is fundamental for the intellectual development of the person, therefore reading comprehension in another language will lead to knowledge expansion and thus activate the cognitive processes that generate critical and logical thinking. OBJECTIVE to analyze the cognitive strategies and their influence on the improvement of reading comprehension of the English language. METHOD. The method used is quasi-experimental because has been applied to fifty University students, divided into two groups, one is the control group and the second is the experimental one. RESULTS. The application of cognitive strategies improves reading comprehension significantly. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS. The use of cognitive strategies, motivates the activation of the cognitive process of the student, getting to understand the readings logically, making it easier to infer meanings, connections, using prior knowledge, and paraphrasing. Future aim is to apply the use of cognitive strategies to other students of the same University from Quito.
