Abstract

Introduction. Mathematical skills are fundamental in the cognitive development of students to benefit from a mind prepared to make the best decision in the real world. Objective. The research focused on determining the level of mathematical competencies held by the Bachelor of the Educational Unit "Riobamba", one of the most numerous in the Province of Chimborazo. Method. An exploratory descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. Regarding the measurement instrument, a test was used that was designed applying the didactic foundations and structures of several evaluation test models and its validation was performed with the Cronbach Alpha coefficient. The data were collected using the aforementioned instrument and analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results. In the research we can highlight that: 1.27% of high school graduates are "very highly competent" as opposed to 59.29% as "not very competent". Discussion and Conclusions. The learning was based on memorism of formulas and repetition of algorithms, giving rise to little initiative for the resolution of reasoning problems, so that a very small percentage of students manage to develop the 3 kinds of skills.
